|
I am thinking of changint the domain of this website from Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | to Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! |
Does anybody have any other suggestions as to a new URL for the website?

Sounds good to me but just one question, is the new domain hosted by forumup, or is it through a different provider?

It will be with a company that specialises in PhP Hosting.
Im not sure if ForumUp provide hosting, but I will look into it.

it's a bit of a long domain name....needs to be something shorter and catchier!
It is possible just to buy a domain and have it acting as a masked forward to the forum up site so that when someone types in Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | they are actually taken to photography.forumup.com but they would never know because the address doesn't change.

I think its actually the other way round. When someone will type in Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | they will be taken to the new domain.

that wouldn't be possible because you don't have control over that domain name (photography.forumup.com)....so you can't have it forwarding!

And because it doesn't support redirects if you do get a new domain you'll have to configure phpBB one way or another and start the forum from scratch as well unless forumup supports database exporting which I highly doubt.

Yeah thats what I want. When I buy the domain I will have to ask the company if it is possible or not.

pretty much everyone does PHP hosting. There free hosting is not but paid hosting is...
It depends what you what though...
If you want to do as above and have a domain forwarding to here then you don't need hosting...just a domain
If you want to buy hosting a take complete control of the forum from the advertising side of things then you would effectively have to get rid of this forum and rebuild a new one. Bearing in mind that the new one would also be the latest version of PHP that you would have to install youself! Also you need some type of database to be provided by the hoster.
PHPbb3 accepts the following:
* MySQL 3.23 or above (MySQLi supported)
* PostgreSQL 7.3+
* SQLite 2.8.2+
* Firebird 2.0+
* MS SQL Server 2000 or above (directly or via ODBC)
* Oracle

no you won't....if you have a domain masked forwarding it just means that people will type in Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | and be taken to this site without know they are at photography.forumup.com, and it works both ways as it will still be possible to just type in photography.forumup.com as it won't have changed!

Yeah, that would definitely be the best way to go. That's what I've done with some sites of mine.
